Trivia[]
- "Cothon" (κώθων) means "drinking cup" in Greek; Ancient Greek authors use this term to describe the artificial harbor of Carthage as the two are metaphorically similar.
- The in-game appearance of Cothon is also based on the Cothon of Carthage, the main merchant harbor as well as the primary naval base of Carthaginians.
- The concept of Cothon is based on the protected harbor basins commonly featured in Phoenician and Carthaginian cities, which remains an iconic image of ancient sea power to this day.
- Cothon are man-made harbor basins that usually dug behind the coastline, and linked to the sea via an artificial channel. This design could solve many problems involved in building a harbor along a shallow coastline, as well as offering naval vessels a relatively protected anchorage.
