Faith is one of the primary yields in Humankind, likely representing religious influence or pressure. In the game, it allows the Empires to spread their Religions.
Faith Production[]
When a Territory currently follows a Religion, the Territory will produce Faith for this Majority Religion. The Faith output is produced from the below sources, and is calculated on a per-Territory basis:
- The initial religion choice (+6 on Main Plaza if Polytheism, or +2 on Admin Center if Shamanism);
- The Holy Sites of a religion (+20 as base value);
- The tier 2 Tenet of a religion (+5 on Territories following the Religion);
- Various Wonders and Emblematic Quarters (e.g., wonders that act as a Holy Site, and Faith-yielding Emblematic Quarters such as Great Obelisk and Nemeton);
- Certain Religion Civics (e.g., Religious Hostility Civic);
- Territories with the Tradition Ideology (+4 on Territories following the state religion at maximum).
Faith and Religion Spread[]
Every Religion can spread across the map and influence other Territories through its Faith production; the spreading is a passive process that are not directly controlled by the Empires.
- Both Faith and Influence spread largely follows the same mechanics.
Basic Faith Spread Mechanics[]
The spreading of a Religion is measured in Territory-based Faith production and can be checked in the Religion Screen.
Every Territory will produce a certain value of Faith for a given Religion, from Holy Sites in this Territory, Emblematic Quarters in this Territory, the " on Territory" bonuses, etc.
- This local value of Faith is known as Faith Production.
- The produced Faith will then spread to and stack up in distant Territories; and this foreign value of Faith is known as Faith Impact (or Religion Pressure among players).
- A Territory can receive Faith Impacts from multiple Territories, sometimes from a long distance away, albeit with a decrease (more on following sections).
Every Territory will receive from both Faith Production and Faith Impact; the sum of both is the Religion Influence of a Religion on a given Territory.
Every Religion's Influence on a Territory is calculated as a percentage of the total Faith this Territory received. If a Religion's Influence on a given Territory is 20% higher in Faith than the Current Religion's Influence, then the Territory and Followers inside it will be gradually convert to the new Religion.
Distance impacts on Faith Spread[]
The spread of Faith across the map decreases with Territory-based distances. A Territory would receive stronger Religion Pressure from adjacent Territories, and reduced Pressure from Territories further away. This distance based decrease is calculated as following:
Faith Impact on distant Territory = Local Faith Production * Territory Distance ^ (-1.25)
"Territory Distance" and also be understand as "Number of Territories the spreading Faith needs to pass through."
This formula means every Territory will always have a 100% Faith pressure on adjacent Territories, and much less than 100% on Territories further away. The minimum Faith Impact is always +1Faith.
Terrain impacts on Faith Spread[]
A Territory can only spread Faith to other Territories connected by Roads.
- If two Territories are adjacent to each other, but not connected by Roads - such as they only share a water border, or the access between the two are blocked by mountains or high cliffs - then the Faith spread between these two Territories will be 0.
For islandic Territories and Territories across the ocean, they will not naturally receive Faith pressure from outside sources beyond the sea. Only by building at least one Harbor or Airport in these Territories can they receive outside Faith.
Trade and Diplomacy impacts on Faith Spread[]
The starting and destination Territories of a Trade Route will receive less reduction on Faith Pressure.
This Faith Spread though Trade is a one-way process, and will only spread the Religion of the Exporting Empire into the Importing Empire. This means a major Exporting Empire with various Luxuries and Strategics, especially if they built Faith-produce Districts in the Resource-rich Territories, will more likely to spread its Religion to the rest of world.
The rules of Faith Spread via Trade Routes are as of below:
- For a Land Route, the Exporting Territory's Faith Pressure to the Importing Territory will only receive 50% distance reduction - in terms of formula, instead of a Distance^(-1.25), it becomes (Distance/2)^(-1.25) - as if the distance between the two are halved.
- For a Naval Route connected by two Harbors, the Importing Territory will receive 100% Faith Pressure from the Exporting Territory, as if the two are adjacent.
- For an Air Route connected by two Airports, the Importing Territory will receive 100% Faith Pressure from the Exporting Territory, as if the two are adjacent.
- For Naval Routes, if one end of the naval Trade Route doesn't have a Harbor - only has a Trade Port instead - then the "unconnected" rule will apply, and Faith will not spread between these two Territories.
- Only the starting and the destination Territories will have their Religion be impacted by Trade Routes. Territories that the Trade Route passing by along the way will not receive anything extra.
If two Empires are at War, then Faith/Religion will not spread between the two. However, if one Empire captures another Empire's city, the occupying Empire can spread its Religion to the conquered city rather easily, as the other Empire cannot spread its Religion to this city anymore.
